News and Journal Highlights

Salutogenesis: The Defining Concept for a New Healthcare System

This article, foundational to the Healing Works Foundation approach, is designed to help healthcare organizations move toward institutionalizing healing as a way of practice through the concept of salutogenesis. “Salutogenesis is the reverse process to pathogenesis, the process of disease, illness generation, and breakdown of function. Medicine teaches and organizes its activities from research to reimbursement on pathogenesis. The new healthcare system must do the same for salutogenesis.” (Source: PubMed)

Vegetarian and Vegan Dietary Patterns to Treat Adult Type 2 Diabetes: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials

This study indicates that diet and lifestyle modifications could be sufficient for preventing up to 75% of all type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) cases. “Diets rich in whole grains, vegetables, fruits, dairy, legumes, and nuts and seeds have been shown to lower the risk of T2DM, whereas those high in sugary drinks and red and processed meat have been linked to an increased risk.” (Source: ScienceDirect)

High Fruit and Vegetable Intake to Decrease Risk of Depression in Adults

Research is finding yet another area where food can play a role in preventing conditions typically addressed with medication. According to this study, “A diet that includes high fruit and vegetable intake is associated with a decreased risk of depression by 9% to 15% in adults 45 years and older.” (Source: American Family Physician)
