News and Journal Highlights

More Than 50 Medical Schools Commit to Increased Nutrition Training, but What Will They Teach?

“Medical students in the US stand to receive more nutrition training in the years ahead. In early March, the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the US Department of Education announced that 53 medical schools had made volunteer commitments to implementing 40 hours of nutrition education or a 40-hour competency equivalent for students starting this fall.” (Source: JAMA Network)

Related news: With grant support from AIH, Novo Nordisk, and Vitamix Foundation, the Teaching Kitchen Collaborative, AAMC, NBME, and ACGME recently hosted the Convening on Best Practices in Medical Nutrition Education. Medical educators, accreditors, researchers, funders, and government officials gathered at AAMC headquarters in DC to focus on the question: “How do we ensure every physician graduates with the nutrition knowledge and skills to address the leading causes of death and disability?” Convening proceedings will be available in the coming months.

Dietary fiber and GLP-1 receptor agonists in obesity management: converging mechanisms, interactions, and strategies for durable weight control

This review examines the synergistic mechanisms of GLP-1 receptor agonists and dietary fibers. “Taken together, the future of obesity management will likely rely on rational combinations rather than single interventions. GLP-1RAs provide fast and substantial metabolic improvements, whereas dietary fibers offer a safe, accessible, and physiologically grounded strategy to sustain gut health, immune homeostasis, and long-term weight maintenance.” (Source: Advances in Nutrition)

Ensuring that Behavioral Strategies, Nutrition, and Culinary Education Are Key Components of Food is Medicine
